BERKELEY, CA—After spending a year studying Mandarin Chinese, GarlicAI editor and noted Chinese food lover John Doe refused to write an article about Chinese president Xi Jinping, claiming that he "still wants to go to the Great Wall and stuff."
"I've been studying this language for over a year now, and I can't risk being banned from China over an article," said Doe, who has been studying the language since he was laid off from his job as a data analyst at a local bank. "I mean, I don't want to miss out on things like the Forbidden City and the Terracotta Army."
Doe's refusal comes after GarlicAI published an article last week about North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, which resulted in the site being blocked by China's internet censors.
"We're not sure what we did wrong," said Doe. "But it seems like they don't like us talking about their leaders."
At publishing time, Doe had agreed to write an article about Xi Jinping if he could be guaranteed nobody would find out his name is Stephen Anderson.
